In 2019, Step Forward delivered the first Good Habits and Nutrition workshop with the presence of Dr. Angela Cuddy, registered dietitian, adjunct faculty at the university of Guelph and Healthcare Consultant. This workshop was attended by 35 women from the Shuar communities of San Simón, Patuca, Sunkants, Loma Seca, Kimius and Saapanaint, who are responsible for the preparation and distribution of food at home.
Dr. Cuddy shared healthy recipes based on Sacha Inchi to equip women with new options for preparing varied and healthy menus that provide the nutrients that their families need using the foods available to them. Likewise, a panel discussion about nutrition and health and a workshop on good hygiene habits was held. Mothers and their children learned the importance of hand hygiene to prevent diseases that can be transmitted through food by contaminated hands.
This workshop not only empowered the women, considering that they are the main people who promote good habits in their households, but indirectly impacts approximately 1818 members of the Shuar communities benefiting from the program for whom these women cook.
